Our Story

IT ALL BEGAN…

After spending many years travelling Australia working in hospitality and retail, Annette and Andrew found themselves in Perth in the year 2001. It only took one class in martial arts for Annette to be hooked on taekwondo. Then two years later Andrew gave a lesson a go to see what all the fuss was about, and as they say, “The rest is history”.

They both had the honour and privilege of training with some fantastic martial arts practitioners who could perform feats that Annette and Andrew could only dream of.  They enjoyed the challenge of learning whilst trying to keep up with twenty-plus-year-old martial artists and young guns, all the while starting their own journey in their thirties.

Through hard work and determination, both Annette and Andrew received their 1st Dan Black Belts.  They continued to improve on these achievements, which saw Annette obtain the rank of 4th Dan Black Belt in 2012, and Andrew, the same rank, in 2015. Gradually they came to realise that, whilst reaching a Black Belt rank was a great achievement, it was even greater to achieve the skill sets and articulation to become an accomplished instructor. They believed that with the combination of their hospitality background, the influence, instruction and inspiration of Master Mark Burridge (founder and owner of Dragon Martial Arts Academy) and a genuine love of teaching, they could add to the martial arts community of Australia.

BUT WHERE TO START?

Their daughter , Brin, was born in Perth, 2007 and a year later they decided to move back to Annette’s home town of Port Macquarie.  It made sense to be close to family and surrounded by the perfect environment for kids to grow up in.  At the time there was only one other full-time martial arts business operating in Port Macquarie.

So, on April 21st, 2008, Jayu Martial Arts Academy opened its doors and the business has never looked back! A few years later, in 2010, Peren was born and yet another family member joined the martial arts community.

Our guiding philosophy

FREEDOM

Jayu is a Korean term for “freedom”. Freedom can present itself in many guises. We believe training at Jayu will empower our students to overcome personal challenges, thus obtain freedom.

BALANCE

The backdrop for our logo features the symbol for Yin and Yang. This represents balance and maintaining balance in life, and in your training, helps you to realise your goals and objectives.

HARMONY

Learning to work with energy rather than against it is at the core of strong technique. The harmonious mindset developed at training also helps students embrace a harmony across their life.
